Cabinet Choice Conundrums: Breaking Down Your Options

cabinet remodelThere are a lot of big decisions that go into a home remodel, and it’s hard to believe how many rooms in a home have cabinets! Think about the entertainment center in your family room, your bathrooms, that luxurious walk-in closet, and especially your kitchen! Plus, what about the kids’ playroom, an office, and so on. There are so many options everywhere you turn, it can make your head spin and make you wary of making a decision.

At MA Restoration, we have come to discover the more you understand your options, the better able you are to make a decision about remodeling the kitchen, bathroom, or any other room in your Westborough home!

Today, we are going to hash out your cabinet options: custom, semi-custom, or stock.

Custom Cabinets

Custom = anything goes. This is the most expensive option. However, you carry the benefit of the cabinets being locally made right here in Westborough – so you can rest easy that the quality and workmanship will be top-of-the-line, and if something should go wrong, help is just down the street.

This is your kitchen, and you can get what you want. The sky is the limit with sizing, styles and colors. Plus, with custom cabinets, you lose all need for fillers because the cabinets can be built in any shape or size imaginable – so there is no wasted space.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

With semi-custom cabinets, you can order custom dimensions to a certain degree, but not to the length you could with custom.

This can be a good in between option during your kitchen remodel. Just like stock cabinets, you have a catalog of cabinets from which to choose a look, hardware, finishes, etc. This catalog will likely have more options all around than the stock cabinet catalog.

However, there is a downside to all this flexibility: cost. The more you change up the standard sizes and options, the more you will pay. Every time you change the size (up or down) of a cabinet, the price will go up. If you need a whole lot of changes, you could be looking at a pretty large price tag for your new cabinets. At that point, considering full custom might be a good option.

Stock Cabinets

These cabinets are exactly as they sound. They generally come from a large factory in a box, unassembled. They come in pretty standard sizes, meaning you won’t be able to have an oddball size made up of a certain stock cabinet you like. What you see is what you get. And, they are generally going to be the lowest price point among these three categories.

However, just because they are premade in large quantities and cheaper does not mean you are necessarily sacrificing quality. That all depends on the company and material used to make the cabinets. Some cabinet companies produce very high-quality stock cabinets with high-end finishes. On the flip side, you can also enter into a world of shoddy carpentry.

If you choose the stock cabinet route, just be aware that you may still have to order some of the cabinets from the manufacturer; they may not all be sitting in the back room ready to rock and roll.
